Introduction to NVivo
March 7, 2011
Giselle Kolenic and Missy Plegue
Note: Topic order is subject to change.Â
The workshop introduces the basic concepts of qualitative analysis and the capabilities of NVivo software. By the end of the workshop, students should be able to utilize the key functions of the software to work on their sponsors’ projects.
This introductory workshop plans to cover the fundamental components of NVivo projects including documents, cases, nodes, attributes, and queries. Throughout the sessions participants will be led through a practice project. The initial procedures related to start a project include preparing and formatting documents in Microsoft Word, importing documents, and creating nodes. Coding in NVivo will be demonstrated and practiced. Participants will then learn how to assign attributes to cases. The workshop will also introduce procedures used to identify and present patterns and associations among ideas. Five types of queries will be taught: text search, coding query, matrix coding query, word frequency query, and compound query, and exercises will be conducted to run different types of queries. An appendix will also be provided that covers additional material, such as using NVivo to code Excel files and the use of Audio & Visual files in NVivo. Material in the appendix will be covered if time allows.
The workshop is not intended to cover qualitative data analysis methodology, although some methodological topics will be addressed.
