Introduction to NVivo 7
December 11, 2009
Lingling Zhang and Danielle Gwinn
This workshop is designed for researchers who are interested in using NVivo 7 for their qualitative data analysis projects. The workshop introduces the basic concepts of qualitative analysis and the capabilities of NVivo software. By the end of the workshop participants should master the key functions of the software and be able to set up their projects. This introductory workshop plans to cover all the fundamental components of NVivo projects including documents, cases, nodes, sets, attributes, relationship, memos, queries, and models. Throughout the sessions participants will be led through a practice project from the beginning to the end. The initial procedures related to start a project include preparing and formatting documents in Microsoft Word, importing documents, editing documents, and creating cases linking to documents. It then follows creating nodes and coding documents. Various coding methods that are available in NVivo will be demonstrated and practiced. Participants will then learn creating attributes, assigning attributes to cases, as well as importing attributes from Excel. The workshop also introduces memos and attributes that are used to help keep track of emerging ideas in qualitative data analysis. Besides these fundamental procedures, the workshop will also cover procedures that are to identify and present patterns and associations among ideas. Participants will create relationships and code materials at relationships. Five types of queries will be taught: text search, coding query, matrix coding query, word frequency query, and compound query, and exercises will be conducted to run different types of queries. In the end a brief introduction of NVivo models will be given on how to visually explore patterns and relationships among ideas.
The workshop is not intended to cover qualitative data analysis methodology, although some methodological topics will be addressed.
