Phases of Instruction

Engaging in the inquiry.

The beginning of GIsML instruction involves becoming engaged about a question of phenomenon that one will study, and part of becoming engaged means determining what can be investigated to determine a response to the guiding question. Students and teachers work together to identify and specify events, objects, or ideas that will be useful to investigate in responding to the guiding question. Specific questions guide the inquiry in particular cycles regarding the selected events, objects, or ideas of study. Determining an appropriate specific focus, and making sure that everyone understands the focus and its relationship to the overall topic of study, are important elements of this step. When that understanding is expected (by teachers and students), an important foundation for building conceptual understanding is established.
