History The Health Informatics Society at the University of Michigan was created in the fall of 2011 by a dedicated group of students under the advisement of professor Kai Zheng and the sponsorship of the School of Information, the School of Public health and the new, University of Michigan, Health Informatics Program.

Purpose HISO is established for the purpose of fostering a community of common interest, increasing awareness of the field, and providing opportunities for professional development and networking.

Membership Mailing list membership is open to any interested person through the University of Michigan Directory. Mailing list membership does not require attendance at meetings or events and aims to facilitate awareness of HISO events and initiatives. Mailing list members have the right to add and remove themselves from the HISO mailing list at any time through the Directory. Active membership shall be limited to persons officially connected with the University of Michigan as registered students, faculty, staff, or alumni from all schools and programs at the University. Active members who attend a third of HISO events and/or meetings are eligible to vote on HISO business and are responsible for responding promptly to calls for support in decision making or planning issued by HISO officers. This will be based on an honor system or, if need be, measured by attendance sheets. All members reserve the right to resign membership at any point by notification to a HISO officer. Resignation of membership, active or mailing list, will result in loss of right to participate in voting and decision making on HISO activities, but will not result in loss of right to be included on HISO mailing list, attend HISO events, communicate suggestions to HISO members or officers, etc. HISO openly admits students to its membership and does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex (including gender identity and expression), color, religion, creed, national origin or ancestry, age, marital status, sexual orientation disability, or veteran status.
