Sangha River Network - Text Conferences

This three-day meeting, 11-13 September 1998, of the SRN steering committee was held at the University of Orléans/ERMES-IRD Laboratory http://www.orleans.ird.fr/ and constituted a crucial link between previous conferences and the development of an innovative scholarly and advisory network. It allowed SRN members to: (1) finalize operation guidelines for the network; (2) assess and shape the developing bibliographic information base and ongoing regional research projects; (3) initiate planning of a future conference in central Africa to further include government, industry, non-governmental and academic representatives from the three African target countries; and (4) elaborate institutional links for research and teaching between European, American and African Research Institutes active in the region. Approximately 30 participants attended from Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, UK, USA and France, as well as advisory members from Benin, Mali and Senegal. Many are students or professors; some are project directors or program officers; a few are government officials. All share two goals: improved coordination among researchers of different disciplines and nationalities; and communication between researchers and the groups of stakeholders, whether international corporations or local and national communities, making management decisions about the environment in Africa and more specifically the Sangha River region.

The proceedings provided here are a combination of French and English - summaries for each full-length presentation given are provided in the alternate language. There are two documents associated with the proceedings: (1) the text and summaries of all presentations provided at the meeting in Orléans, and (2) the final proposal (August 1999) for the currently active ‘Megatransect Project’ being conducted by SRN Member and long-time Sangha River Region conservationist, Dr. J.
