ABOUT DISCUSSION-- PURPOSE AND EXPECTATIONS
Psychology 380's main mission is to introduce you to a variety of topics within the complex, scientific, interdisciplinary realm of social psychology.  You will be introduced to a wide range of theories and concepts.  You will also learn about the scientific methods used in the investigation of these theories and concepts.  Underlying the study of psychology is the notion that in order to understand human interaction, we must understand why the individual person behaves and thinks as they do.

Given the fact that you will be introduced to a great deal of material in lectures, the text and the coursepack, it is critical that you regularly attend discussion and participate.  Tardiness is not tolerated and if you have special circumstances which do not permit you to regularly make discussion on time, it may be suggested that you consider taking this course at another time.  Discussion is a place where you can ask questions about lecture materials, have difficult concepts clarified and interact with your peers.  Discussion sections are the interactive component of Psychology 380.  As such, everyone will be expected to come prepared and to engage fully and respectfully.

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES
Please let me know within the first two weeks of class if you have a special circumstance that may affect your attendance, participation and/or comfort in class in any way.  Such circumstances may include, but are not limited to, having a certified disability, involvement in religious observances or having English as a second language.  For students with disabilities, the following resource may be helpful: Services for Students with Disabilities G625 Haven Hall  763-3000
http://www.umich.edu/~sswd/ssd/index.html.  Other circumstances that may affect your attendance (e.g., illness, injury, death in the family) should be brought to my attention as far in advance, or as soon after absence, as possible.  If prior notification is not possible, you should bring a note from the appropriate party (e.g., doctor) explaining your absence.

OFFICE HOURS
I will hold drop-in office hours from 2:30-3:30PM every Tuesday in 3261 East Hall.  If you are unable to meet with me during these times, I will be more than happy to meet at a time that is mutually convenient, just e-mail me to set up an appointment.  Please come talk to me if you have concerns about the course, your grades, anything.

GRADING AND ASSIGNMENTS

BLIND GRADING
Psychology 380 has a blind-grading policy.  What this means is that those who grade your work will never know whose work they are reading (so as to prevent bias from interfering with fair grading).  In order for this process to work, it will be necessary for you to submit all of your written work with the middle 8 digits (underlined on the front of newer U Mich ID cards) of your student ID number and your section number as the only visible identifiers-- do not write your name on any of the work you submit for a grade!

GRADE DISTRIBUTION
Your exams, cumulatively, determine 60% of your total grade for this course (3 exams @ 20% each).  What you do in discussion section, therefore, determines the remaining 40% of your grade.  This 40% of your grade will be composed of the following:
Helping Paper-- 15% of your total grade
Film Analysis Paper-- 15% of your total grade
Participation-- 10% of your total grade (in the form of 5 quizzes, given randomly throughout the semester, worth
2% of your total grade each)
Grades are determined on a point scale.  Letter grades may be marked on your work for your convenience.  To see your scores on quizzes, papers and exams, as well as your point totals, please see me during section.  See the Psychology 380 class syllabus for the grading scale.  If you have questions or concerns about any particular grade that you receive, please come and talk with me as soon as possible.  Do not wait until the end of the term to dispute a grade that you received during the first week or two of class!  By waiting this long, you usually remove any possibility that anything can be done regarding a grade change.  Additionally, if you have any special circumstances that will prevent you from taking a quiz or an exam or turning a paper in on time, please let me know as early in the term as possible.

EXAMS
Exams will be given in lecture on Wednesday October 11, Wednesday November 8 and Wednesday December 13.  Please note, however, that the exam may NOT always be held in the lecture room.  Given this fact, it is very important that you pay attention to in-class and web announcements regarding exam locations.  There will be no exam given during the final exam period.  See the Psychology 380 syllabus or web site for more information about exams.

QUIZZES
You will have five quizzes (worth 2% of your total grade each) throughout the semester.  Each quiz will be given during the first fifteen minutes of discussion.  There will be no makeup quizzes or extra time allotted.  If you miss a quiz due to tardiness or absence, you will receive an automatic zero.  Since quizzes will occur randomly throughout the semester, it is in the best interest of your grade for you to attend each and every discussion session.  Quizzes may consist of multiple choice, short answer, fill-in-the-blank and/or essay questions.  Questions may address material covered on and before the date of the quiz since you will be expected to be prepared for each discussion prior to the discussion itself.  Questions may include material from the text, coursepack, lectures and discussion.

PAPERS
You will have two papers due throughout the semester.  Each paper is worth 15% of your final grade.  Papers are due at the very beginning of discussion on their due date.  If you do not turn in a paper on its due date, there will be a third of a grade drop for each day that it is late.  If you will be absent on the day that a paper is due, you must still turn in your paper by the time that it is due for everyone else.  You can leave papers in my mailbox in 3242 East Hall.  If you will be dropping off a paper, please send me an email to let me know that you have done so.  Specific guidelines for the papers will be distributed in discussion.  See your section schedule (005 or 008) for paper guideline distribution and due dates.
