The American National Election Studies datasets are available on `tempter', a UNIX workstation. The best way to access and analyze the data is to run a SAS program on this machine. To do this you will need to know a little bit about UNIX, emacs and SAS.
Note that UNIX (unlike MS DOS) cares about the case of alphabetic characters. So you must type the UNIX commands as shown. Note that to execute a command you have to press the RETURN key (sometimes marked ``Enter'').
Commands which you will type will be in ugly font. I will sometimes show the prompt (shell command line) and the command, tempter% thecommand - you just type in whatever is in place of ``thecommand''.
