Yeah, install MkLinux on the 8100 and use the netatalk RPM that comes
with the standard distribution. I did this with a 6100/66 and it's
faster than you would think. The only thing I had to do to get it going
was to edit AppleVolumes.default to point to the directories I wanted to
share. A fast hard drive would help.

Is your /etc/services file set up correctly? Are you using AppleShare
or AS/IP?
