James Adox
Partner—EDF Ventures
Ann Arbor , MI

Mr. Adox joined EDF in 1997 and is a Partner with the firm. He focuses on investments in the Information Technology sector. Mr. Adox has a broad technical and general Republic.

Mr. Adox is active on the Boards of Avail Networks, HandyLab Inc., AlfaLight Inc., and Xtera Communications Inc. He played a key role in the formation and initial funding round of numerous EDF portfolio companies, including; Xtera Communications and HandyLab Inc., performing the key roles of CFO, Treasurer or Secretary for these companies.

Jim has over ten years experience in various operations and strategic roles. His technical experience includes six years of design and development engineering, product development, project management, testing and manufacturing for leading U.S. corporations. Jim spent three years in international sales, marketing and business development, where he had P & L responsibility for product launches in Brazil, Mexico and Argentina.

Mr. Adox has an MBA with Highest Distinction, and a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering, all from The University of Michigan. Jim also is fluent in Spanish and is an avid triathlete, windsurfer, water and snow skier, and softball player.

Mary Lincoln Campbell
General Partner—EDF Ventures
Ann Arbor, MI

Mary Lincoln Campbell is a founder and general partner for EDF Ventures. She has led the firm's investments in over a dozen companies in health care and software. Currently, she serves as a Director of Aastrom Biosciences, Inc., a developer of medical instruments for cell therapy; Entivity, Inc., a company that develops web-based productivity solutions for the manufacturing and distribution markets; and Fullscope, Inc., a provider of web-enabled collaborative work environments for knowledgeworkers. She also leads the firm's fundraising activities.

Under Campbell's tenure, EDF Ventures has achieved several major accomplishments, including:
  • The Initial Public Offerings of Aastrom BioSciences, Inc., a developer of medical instruments for cell therapy; Pacific Biometrics, Inc., a developer of proprietary non-invasive medical diagnostic products; and Pixelworks, Inc., a developer of system-on-a-chip semiconductors and software for broadband content. Pixelworks is the firm's most successful investment to date, having returned over 160% of the capital to the investors in EDF II.

  • Led the formation of the Wolverine Venture Fund, a fund advised by Campbell and operated by students in the MBA program at the University of Michigan Business School. Under Campbell's leadership, the fund has established a portfolio of 8 companies, built relationships with several venture capital funds, and has established a summer internship program..

  • Campbell is active in the marketing activities of the firm, is a frequent speaker at University and industry events, and serves as a liaison to several search firms.
Campbell is one of three founders of EDF Ventures. Prior to participating in the formation of the firm, Campbell served as president of Michigan Capital and Service, Inc. a subsidiary of NBD Bancorp (now BancOne) in Ann Arbor, Mich. MCS had a national portfolio of technology-driven companies that led to several successful IPOs.

She is a member of the Michigan Governor's Life Sciences Steering Committee and serves on several boards including that of Northern Michigan University, the Ann Arbor IT Zone, the Wolverine Venture Fund, the Zell-Lurie Center for Entrepreneurship, and the University of Michigan Business School Visiting Committee. She formerly chaired the Board of Trustees of Greenhills School, and has been active in several other community organizations.

Campbell earned an MBA, with Distinction, and a Bachelor's degree in English from the University of Michigan, and her Master's degree, with Honors, from Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT. She currently resides in Ann Arbor with her husband, Brian P. Campbell.

John Denniston
Chief Operating Officer—Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers
Menlo Park, CA

John Denniston joined Kleiner Perkins in February, 2001 as Chief Operating Officer. John came to KPCB from Salomon Smith Barney, where he was a Managing Director and head of Technology Investment Banking for the Western U.S., and also served on the Investment Committee for Salomon's direct investment venture fund and its venture capital fund-of-funds. Prior to Salomon, John was a Partner with the law firm Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison, where he was the head of Brobeck's Venture Capital Practice Group, Co-head of its Information Technology Practice Group and a member of the Investment Committee for its venture capital fund. He holds a B.A. in Economics and a J.D. from the University of Michigan.

Jim Geschke
Vice President and General Manager, Electronics Integration—Johnson Controls
Holland, MI
Jim Geschke, 45, is vice president and general manager, electronics integration for Johnson Controls. In this position, he is responsible for developing new electronics opportunities for the future, as well as strengthening relationships with electronic suppliers in Europe and North America. He was promoted to this position in June 1999.

Geschke has been a key architect of Johnson Controls' Peer Partnering™ strategy, leading the company's first set of Peer Partnering relationships in the electronics arena. He continues to develop the Peer Partnering program for the automotive group of Johnson Controls.

Prior to his current appointment, Geschke served as director of global business development and product planning since 1997. He joined Johnson Controls as part of the former Prince Corporation of Holland, Michigan in 1992 as chief engineer of electronics.

Before joining Johnson Controls, Geschke served as director of sales and marketing for Kantus, an interior trim and electronics supplier located in Detroit, Michigan. He began his professional career with Chrysler Corporation, where he spent 14-years in various management positions of increasing responsibility.

Geschke earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan in 1976. He earned a Master's of Business Administration degree, with an emphasis in marketing from the University of Detroit-Mercy in 1990.

He is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, and holds four patents for interior electronic and electrical products.

Geschke and his wife, Trudy, have two children and reside in Holland, Michigan.

Randy Grimes
Director of Business Development—Integrated Sensing Systems
Ann Arbor, MI

Randy Grimes is the Director of Business Development at Integrated Sensing Systems, a vertically integrated MEMS application company. He is responsible for market research, business and portfolio planning, corporate strategy and general marketing communication for the company's advanced industrial, medical product and microfluidic segments. Prior to joining ISSYS, Mr. Grimes was a research scientist with Donnelly Corporation, where he received a number of patents on conductive polymers and electrochomic systems. Mr. Grimes hold an undergraduate degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Arizona and an MBA with distinction from the University of Michigan where he was a fellow in the Tauber Manufacturing Institute.

Dr. Tom Haddock
Director of Research—Applied Micro Medical Systems, Inc.
Ann Arbor, MI

Dr. Tom Haddock is Director of Research and co-founder of Applied Micro Medical Systems, Inc. (AMMS), dedicated to developing microsensor products for interventional cardiology. He has over 25 years of technical management experience in early-stage technology companies and academia, developing products, systems and manufacturing processes in a wide range of application areas. These include physiologic applications of MEMS accelerometers, millimeter-wave radiometric detection systems, fluoropolymer ultrafilters for semiconductor fabs, state-of-the-art leukocyte-depleting blood-transfusion filters, optical data-storage cards, catheters and on-line sensing systems for cardiovascular bypass surgery, and optical, infrared, and polarimetric machine-vision systems for manufacturing automation. His experience spans all aspects of bringing products from prototype to full production, including acquiring personnel and facilities for research and manufacturing, developing novel manufacturing processes, generating QC and validation protocols, and satisfying regulatory requirements. Dr. Haddock has written over 40 scientific publications and reports on many topics, including extragalactic radio astronomy, millimeter-wave radar and radiometry, human leukocyte cell surface adhesion molecules, and machine vision. He studied at the University of Michigan where he earned an A.B. degree in mathematics and statistics, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Physic

David Hartwig
Senior Associate—Battery Ventures
San Mateo, CA

Dave joined Battery in 1997 and works in the San Mateo office, where he is focused on the communications component and equipment markets. His most recent investment work has been with Alphion, Corrent Corporation, and Inkra Networks. Dave is involved with a number of Battery portfolio companies, serving as a Director of Corrent, NetsWork Inc., and Predictive Networks while lending a helping hand at Lara and SigmaTel. Prior to joining Battery, Dave worked at Deloitte Consulting where he was a member of their Networking Service Line. Outside of work he supports entrepreneurship through his involvement in the Young Entrepreneurs at Haas organization and spends his free time reading, writing, swimming and biking. Dave graduated with honors from Princeton University with a BSE in Operations Research.

Thomas C. Kinnear

Thomas C. Kinnear is Eugene Applebaum Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies, Executive Director of the Samuel Zell and Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, and Professor of Marketing at the University of Michigan Business School. He is former editor of the Journal of Marketing and the Journal of Public Policy & Marketing. He is co-author of multiple editions several books including: Principles of Marketing, Marketing Research: An Applied Approach, Promotional Strategy, and Cases in Marketing Management. Professor Kinnear has worked in consulting for firms such as: Aetna, AT&T, Alcatel, Chrysler, Domino's Pizza, Inc., Eli Lilly, Ford, General Motors, General Electric, Helmac Products, Kodak, L'Air Liquide (France), and Travelers. He also has served or is serving as a member of the Board of Directors or Corporate Advisory Boards for several companies and community organizations including: Avail Networks, Inc., Bard Manufacturing, Inc., Beautiful Island.Com, BlueGill Technologies, Inc., Copernicus, Inc., Domino's Pizza, Inc., Greenhills School, Helmac Products, Inc., Interpretive Software, Inc., and Network Express, Inc. In 1990, he co-founded and served as a director of Network Express, an early competitor in the ISDN market. It was sold in 1995 for $110 million to Cabletron Systems. In 1996, he co-founded and served as a director of Bluegill Technologies, the pioneer in bill and document presentment on the Internet. It was sold in 2000 for $250 million to Checkfree Holdings Corporation. In 1999, he co-founded and is serving as a director of Avail Networks, a DSL hardware and software provider, and of Beaufiful Island.com, an ISP targeted at seniors. He hold an undergraduate degree from Queen's University at Kingston, Ontario, an MBA from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Michigan.

Ronald P. Knockeart
Vice President, Driver Information Systems—Siemens Automotive Corporation
Auburn Hills , MI

Currently Mr. Knockeart is Vice President, Driver Information Systems, for Siemens Automotive Corporation. His responsibilities include the sales, marketing, and development of Navigation and Telematics products for application in the North American OEM vehicle market.

He has directed the development of many significant new products, such as:
  • First laser scanning code reader
  • First rf-based remote vehicle door locking system
  • First automated, off-board, turn-by-turn, route guidance system
Formerly, Mr. Knockeart was Vice President, Central Technology, with Siemens Automotive Corporation and its predecessor, Bendix Electronics; with global responsibility for the creation and development of advanced electrical and electronics products, technology, and systems for the automotive applications.

Ron began his career as an aerospace research engineer with the Bendix Corporation. There he was involved in the development of many future products as well as contributing to the Apollo Space Program.

Ron earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from Lawrence Technological University, a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Wayne State University, and attended Penn State's Business School. He is a registered Professional Engineer, and is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, serving in numerous advisory and leadership positions for the SAE. He holds many U.S. patents related to electronics products and electronic systems, including advanced vehicle navigation systems.

Ron is one of the founding members of ITS America and served on the Coordinating Council for six years.

John Kwant
Managing Director, Venture Capital Group—Ford Motor Company
Dearborn, MI

John Kwant is the Managing Director of Ford Motor Company's Venture Capital Group. Ford Motor Company is a strategic investor and places investments in entities where Ford will be a clear value driver to the company. Ford manages a portfolio of 34 investments, and in 2000, closed a total of 12 transactions. Prior to this, Mr. Kwant was responsible for business development, mergers, acquisitions and strategic alliances concentrating on new distribution channels related to Internet transactions at Ford.

Before joining Ford in August 1999, Kwant spent four years at Pitney Bowes, Inc, where he was director of Internet business development. Prior to this, he worked as a consultant with Deloitte & Touche and in various assignments with General Motors in manufacturing and operations.

Mr. Kwant holds an MBA, Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University and BSE, industrial and operations engineering, University of Michigan.

Jeff Lansaw
Manager, VPO Business Development—Ford Global Purchasing
Dearborn, MI

Jeff Lansaw is the Manager of Vehicle Procurement Operations Business Development for Ford Global Purchasing. He is responsible for identifying and negotiating deals with technology firms as part of Ford's Value Participation Program. Mr. Lansaw has also served as Purchasing Specialist for telematics and advanced electronics. Mr. Lansaw joined Ford in 1995 after serving in various capacities with Westinghouse Electric at its Electronics and Power Generation Business Units. Mr. Lansaw holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from The Ohio State University as well as Bachelors of Science in Engineering, Math and Physics.

Erik Lundberg, CFA
Chief Investment Officer, University of Michigan

Mr. Lundberg is the Chief Investment Officer of the University of Michigan, in charge of directing and overseeing the investment of the University's $5 billion in financial assets. He joined the University from Ameritech, where he was responsible for global asset allocation research and implementation and also had managed both the domestic and international equity programs. Mr. Lundberg holds an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin—Eau Claire and an MBA from the Ohio State University. He is a CFA charterholder.

Earl K. Lyle
Manager, Business Development—Ford Global Purchasing
Dearborn, MI

Earl K. Lyle is the Manager, Business Development for Ford Global Purchasing. He is responsible for managing the Value Participation Program through which he establishes strategic alliances with suppliers. Mr. Lyle joined Ford in 1997. Prior to that he managed his own public accounting practice in which he specialized in providing accounting, tax and consulting services to start-up and development stage businesses. Mr. Lyle has also worked as a consultant and accountant for KMPG Peat Marwick and Arthur Andersen.

Mr. Lyle holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of California at Berkeley and he is a Certified Public Accountant.

Dennis Merens
Director, Corporate Venture Capital, New Businesses—Dow Chemical Company
Midland, MI

Merens is currently Director of Corporate Venture Capital of The Dow Chemical Company. The purpose of the position is to pursue both financial and strategic objectives through investments in start-up enterprises.

Merens provides venture capital expertise and the key leadership required to structure and operate a global corporate venture capital program.

Merens co-ordinates a multi-functional effort to identify, assess and exploit potential investment opportunities that optimize both technology and financial objectives.

Merens was appointed to his current position as Director, Corporate Venture Capital in June 1994.

Roger S. Newton, Ph.D.
President and CEO—Esperion Therapeutics, Inc.
Ann Arbor, MI

Founded in July 1998 and located in Ann Arbor, MI, Esperion is dedicated to the discovery and development of pharmaceutical products for the treatment of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Dr. Newton's research interests over the past twenty-five years have focused on the nutritional and pharmacological regulation of cholesterol and lipoprotein metabolism as they relate to atherosclerosis and vascular diseases. During his tenure at Parke-Davis from 1981-1998, he was Chairman of the Atherosclerosis Drug Discovery Team, during which time he co-discovered and was the product champion of what is now the most widely prescribed cholesterol reducing drug, Lipitor. Dr. Newton is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Michigan Medical School. He has co-authored more than a hundred peer-reviewed articles and chapters during his research career.

Dr. Gilbert S. Omenn
CEO, University of Michigan Health System
EVP, Medical Affairs, University of Michigan

Dr. Omenn is the Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs of the University of Michigan and CEO for University of Michigan Health System. He is also Professor of Internal Medicine and Professor of Human Genetics.

Among his professional activities, he is currently chair of the Institute of Medicine panel on federal oversight of health care quality, EMF Scientific Advisory Committee (Electric Power Research Institute), Olestra Surveillance Advisory Committee (Proctor & Gamble Co.) and is a member of Scientific Advisory Committee of Motorola Science Advisers.

Dr. Omenn was previously the Dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Washington, Associate director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and then the Office of Management and Budget in the Carter Administration. He was also Chairman of the Presidential/Congressional Commission on Risk Assessment and Risk Management (1994-97).

He is the author of 300-plus research papers and scientific reviews and author/editor of 17 books on topics including the chemoprevention of cancers, risk analysis, and the genetic predisposition to environmental and occupational health hazards, and was the principal investigator in the trial of beta-carotene and vitamin A as preventive agents against lung cancer and heart disease.

Dr. Omenn holds an A.B. from Princeton, an M.D. from Harvard and a Ph.D. in genetics from the University of Washington.

Warren Packard
Managing Director—Draper Fisher Jurveston
Redwood City, CA

Warren Packard is a Managing Director at Draper Fisher Jurvetson. He currently serves on the Boards of BinOptics, BrightLink Networks, BinOptics, Digital Impact (NASDAQ: DIGI), DigitalWork.com, Enviz, FlexICS, On Your Mind, and Outcome. Mr. Packard also led the firm's investments in MEMGen, Chilisoft (acquired by Sun Microsystems), Direct Hit Technologies (acquired by Ask Jeeves), Fogdog Sports (acquired by Global Sports), and NetMind (acquired by Puma Technology). Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Packard co-founded Angara E-Commerce Services, a venture funded ASP firm focused on delivering hosted website personalization services. Prior to Angara, he was an Associate at Institutional Venture Partners, investing in early-stage technology companies. Before IVP, Mr. Packard was a Senior Principal Engineer in the New Business and Advanced Product Development Group at Baxter International. In this position, he led professionals from product development, marketing, and manufacturing in the design and manufacture of next-generation kidney dialysis machines. During his tenure at Baxter, Mr. Packard received a number of domestic and international patents for his engineering work - including designs of silicon-based micro-electromechanical systems. Mr. Packard is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Stanford University and holds a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering: Smart Product Design. He received his MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business where he was an Arjay Miller Scholar.

Jeff Sloan
CEO and Managing Director—Sloan Ventures LLC
Birmingham, MI

Jeff Sloan Jeffrey is the visionary force behind Sloan Ventures. He is focused on setting the course and managing the growth of the firm through strategic planning, generation of deal flow, and investor relations. He co-founded Sloan Ventures in 1990, which has enjoyed an unprecedented track record of success in developing, financing, and growing high-tech ventures.

A successful inventor, Jeffrey was naturally drawn to the venture capital industry after bringing his own invention, known as the "Battery Buddy", to market in early 1990. The Battery Buddy is a patented technology which prevents dead batteries in vehicles and is now integrated into a version of the Sears DieHard Battery. Following the successful licensing of his own invention, Jeffrey spearheaded the successful development and licensing of a variety of innovations developed by other inventors. This activity evolved into the current venture development and capitalization thrust of Sloan Ventures.

Additionally, Jeffrey is founder and chairman of Digital Detroit, www.digitaldetroit.org, a non-profit organization focused on energizing Michigan's high-tech economy through education, inspiration, and networking. Jeffrey is also co-host of The Digital Hour, a weekly radio program on NewsTalk WJR-AM 760, which addresses issues, information, and events relevant to the high-tech community.

In March 2001, Jeffrey was recognized as a "Who's Who in Technology" by Crain's Detroit Business. Jeffrey is a frequent guest lecturer at leading university business schools and business forums around the country. He is co-founder and managing director of The Bluesky Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping non-profit associations achieve their goals. Jeffrey is a graduate of the University of Michigan.

Sloan Ventures is an early-stage venture development and financing firm focused on technology-based companies. Rick Snyder
CEO—Ardesta, LLC
Ann Arbor, MI

Rick Snyder is CEO and co-founder of Ardesta, LLC. Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Ardesta is dedicated to the development of the microsystems industry. The company invests in startups and early stage companies; provides business and technical resources to support these companies; and develops industry-building resources such as publications, web sites and trade shows.

In 1997, Rick founded Avalon Investments, Inc., a venture capital company targeted at investments in technology-oriented ventures. From 1991 to 1997, he served as Executive Vice President and then President and COO of Gateway, Inc., where his responsibilities included overseeing all aspects of company operations and assisting in the strategic direction of the company. During his tenure with Gateway, the company grew from a privately held $500 million company to a NYSE traded organization with revenues in excess of $6 billion.

He studied at the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of General Studies degree with high distinction in 1977, a Masters of Business Administration with distinction in 1979, and a Juris Doctor in 1982. He completed his third degree at age 23. Rick is a member of the Michigan Bar Association and was previously a member of various CPA societies. He has been active in community affairs and has held leadership positions in the United Way, the March of Dimes, and various Chamber of Commerce organizations.

Currently, Rick serves on the Board of Directors of Gateway, Inc., and Launch Media, Inc., both publicly-held companies, and on the boards of a number of privately-held companies. He also serves on the board of The University of Michigan's College of Engineering National Advisory Committee and the Governor's e-Michigan Advisory Council.

Arlan Stehney
Executive Director—IDB Forum
Washington DC

Mr. Stehney is the Executive Director of IDB Forum, an international technology development association with over 70+ members working to develop and promote open-architecture in-vehicle networking. Members include Ford, General Motors, Nokia, Motorola and Windriver Systems. IDB Forum has established relationships with Automotive Multimedia Interface Collaboration, 1394 Trade Association, and Consumer Electronics Association.

He was previously the Intelligent Transportation Systems Program Leader at the Society of Automotive Engineers, where he managed the standards development program including government contracts for passenger and commercial vehicle ITS Standards Development. Development efforts included: ITS Data Bus, Advanced Traveler Information Systems, Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward/Side/Backing Collision Warning and Avoidance, Navigation, Route Guidance, and Location Reference Profiling.

Mr. Stehney has received graduate and undergraduate degrees in Engineering Management and Industrial Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.

David C. Turner
Administrator—Alternative Investments Division
Lansing, MI

David Turner is Administrator of the Michigan Alternative Investments Program with responsibility to direct and manage a diversified private equity portfolio valued at $8.0 billion and a staff of 11. He also served as a Senior Portfolio Manager for the private equity group for over 15 years and in this capacity has originated, managed and liquidated over thirty investments in venture capital and buyout funds, and public and private operating companies both domestically and internationally and is a current or past member of several private equity partnership advisory boards and company boards of directors. In his earlier career, Mr. Turner has over 12 years experience in the fields of small business finance, technology transfer, economic development, and urban and regional planning in both executive and consulting capacities. Mr. Turner has published several articles in his professional fields of interest and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Urban Planning from the State University of New York.
