Dr. David J. Brophy, MBA, Ph.D., Director
Professor David J. Brophy is a member of the Finance Faculty at the University of Michigan School of Business Administration where he teaches courses in venture capital and private equity finance. He is Director of the UMBS Center for Venture Capital and Private Equity Finance (CVP), and is a member of the executive committee for the Zell-Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies (ZLI).
He has published extensive research on venture capital and private equity finance and has twice won the National Association of Small Business Investment Companies Research Award. He is the author of a book titled Finance, Entrepreneurship and Economic Development, and has published a large number of research papers in this and other aspects of finance. He is a founding member of the editorial board of the Journal of Business Venturing, The Journal of Private Equity Finance, and the International Venture Capital Journal.
He has been a director of several public companies and is a director and advisor to a number of banks, money market funds, and financial services firms including Compass Technology Partners (a venture capital firm in Palo Alto, CA), Munder Capital Management (Birmingham, MI), Continental Capital (OH), River Place Holdings (Detroit,MI) and General Motors Acceptance Corporation Wholesale Auto Receivables Corporation. He also is an investor in and an advisor to a number of emerging technology-based firms.
John J. Nestor (Jack), Research Associate, MBA Class of 2004
Jack is a MBA student at the University of Michigan with a
concentration in Finance and Strategy. Before attending the University of
Michigan, Jack spent two years at Willis Stein & Partners, a Chicago-based
private equity firm and three years at J.C. Bradford & Co., a regional
investment bank based in Nashville. Prior to that Jack worked on several
political campaigns. Jack received a B.A. in Government from Colby College
in 1994.
Jeffrey A. Stone, Research Associate, MBA Class of 2004
Program Management
Currently enrolled in the MBA program at the University of Michigan, Jeff had spent four years as Executive VP of a small manufacturing firm in Michigan and three years in Business Development for Parson Consulting, a national professional services firm providing consulting services in finance and accounting to the Fortune 1000. Most recently, Jeff closed a LBO of a small manufacturing firm in west Michigan as a Managing Director of Platinum Ventures, LLC. Jeff plans to continue in Private Equity focusing on middle market, middle-late stage deals.
George Weinmann, Research Associate, MBA Class of 2004
A graduate of the University of Virginia with a B.S. in Aerospace
Engineering, George began his career at The Boeing Company on satellite
launch vehicles before moving into a variety of business development and
strategy roles. Prior to coming the University of Michigan he helped found
Boeing Ventures, a $200 M corporate venture fund where he launched several
projects in energy, manufacturing, and telecommunications. George is on the
board of ADI Thermal Power, a start up distributed-power technology company,
and is actively involved in a number of charitable and cultural projects.

Sunil K. Thakur, Research Associate, MBA Class of 2004
Sunil is a successful entrepreneur; he started Ashlon, LLC (www.ashlon.com); a dental distribution company based in Ann Arbor. He has a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alabama and has over ten years of experience in various industries working with companies like Motorola and Pall Corp. Sunil plans to continue his entrepreneurial career during and after his MBA studies.
