 ANTI VIOLENCE RIBBON DRIVE

This winter, in honor of the late Dr. Barnett Slepian, members of the undergraduate Students for Choice group joined with our members to create and distribute over 700 green ribbons campus-wide. The ribbons were distributed with the following text attached:

On Friday, October 23 Dr. Barnett Slepian was fatally shot through his kitchen window while talking to his wife and teen-aged son. Dr. Slepian, an obstetrician/gynecologist had for years been harrassed and threatened because of his role as an abortion provider in the community. His murder was the latest incident in a series of violent attacks against health-care workers in abortion clinics.

Violence and the use of threats are unacceptable means for any form of protest. Perhaps stated best by President Clinton, "…this nation can not tolerate violence directed at those providing a constitutionally protected medical service."

We ask that you wear this ribbon in memory of Dr. Slepian and as a symbol of your opposition to violent protest.

OUR CURRENT EFFORTS TO REVISE THE CURRICULUM

Last year, the Curriculum Reform Committee worked on designing a multidisciplinary conference for first and second year medical students on abortion and contraception. There was a basic science component that was designed to highlight the biochemistry of RU-486. A clinician from the Ob/Gyn department was asked to speak on reproductive health in general, and specifically surgical abortion and contraception. Also, a component was to include a discussion of the ethical issues involved in providing or referring individuals for terminations, during the pre-clinical Introduction To The Patient course at the Medical School. We are working with the administration to try and implement this or a similar MDC in the upcoming year.
