About OAPAMA
Cultural diversity is an important dimension in American higher education,
and the University of Michigan has a critical role to educate and support
the leaders of the multicultural society of our present and our future. We
believe that increased understanding of truth and the discovery of new
knowledge are not luxuries intended for a small elite; rather they must be
part of the educational experience of a broad spectrum of learners. As
proponents of multiculturalism, we continue to explore the history,
literature, philosophy, science, and creative expression of human thought
and culture as the sources of the true value of diversity.
Through its programs, grants, and advocacy for infusion of multiculturalism
into University life, the Office of the Associate Provost for Academic and
Multicultural Affairs (OAPAMA) is a reflection of the high value the
University places on diversity.
Created in 1987, OAPAMA is one of several major areas reporting directly
to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. OAPAMA
sponsors a number of faculty grant and award programs and supervises
several departments which have a direct impact on the quality of
undergraduate education.
