OVPAMA Faculty Awards Program


The Office of the Vice Provost for Academic and Multicultural Affairs has as one of its primary missions to support the intellectual and scholarly development of the University's faculty. The infusion of multicultural content and intellectual diversity into the teaching and research activities of faculty is the foundation of institutional change and a reflection of the high value the University places on diversity. OVPAMA provides support for faculty and primary research staff at various points in their academic careers, and also has programs that provide stimulating discourse with visiting faculty. Application packets may be requested by contacting OVPAMA or calling (313) 763-8123. Please make note of the deadlines in each program description. Faculty may also wish to contact The Division of Research Development and Administration, the Office of the Vice President for Research and the Center for Research on Teaching and Learning for information on other faculty grant programs at Michigan.

Harold R. Johnson Diversity Service Award

Named in honor of Dean Emeritus Harold Johnson, former Dean of the School of Social Work, this award was established in 1996 whose service contributes to the development of a more culturally and ethnically diverse campus community. Click here for information on the Johnson Diversity Service Award Winners for 1996 and 1997 . Nominees must be full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty on the Ann Arbor campus. Criteria for selection include:

Commitment to the centrality of diversity as an important part of the University's educational mission.
Writings and public statements which demonstrate intellectual excellence and commitment to cultural diversity in service, teaching, and/or scholarship.
Efforts to bring about constructive change on issues regarding diversity within his or her academic unit and/or the University.
Efforts in bringing his or her scholarly knowledge to bear on influencing the success of students and faculty of diverse cultural and racial backgrounds.
Willingness to serve as a mentor to students.
Efforts to bring about equity in our society.

Faculty Awards for Research and Creative Projects

This program is specifically designed to assist faculty in establishing and sustaining an active program of research and scholarship which contributes both to their intellectual development and to the multicultural goals of the University. Award categories include:
* Co-Sponsorship of Symposia, Conferences, or Colloquia
* Student Research Assistance
* Research and Professional Travel
* Subvention for Publications, Recordings, Showings, and Performances
* Interdisciplinary and Collaborative Research
* Seed Money for New Faculty to Launch Research Programs
* Supplementary Stipends for Faculty on Fellowships and Sabbatical

Awards are made only in combination with matching support. Applications are reviewed twice each year by a faculty panel. Deadlines for complete applications are November 1 and April 1. Presidential Professors Program

Members of the faculty are strongly encouraged to make nominations for Presidential Professorships - one of the most distinct honors the University bestows upon visiting faculty. This program enhances the intellectual diversity of the University community by providing an opportunity for visits by distinguished individuals who have made extraordinary contributions in the arts, sciences, humanities, business, politics, and/or international affairs. Residencies are a full semester or of shorter duration. Candidates should have credentials of the caliber equivalent to that of a University of Michigan full professor. Past Presidential Professors include:
Emilio Pantojas Garcia, Director of the Center for Social Research at the University of Puerto Rico
Patricia Hill Collins, Professor of African American Studies at the University of Cincinnati
Nationally-recognized choreographer Pearl Primus.

OVPAMA provides the full cost of the salary and $500 for other costs associated with a Presidential Professor's residency. Nominations can be made at anytime during the year. King*Chavez*Parks Visiting Professors Program

Funded through both the University and the State of Michigan, the primary purpose of the King*Chavez*Parks Program is to increase the number of underrepresented instructors in the classroom by providing role models for students in primary and secondary schools and at institutions of higher education throughout Michigan. Visiting professorships are from one to five days in length and should include activities for guest scholars and artists to appear with students both within the University and at other schools in the community. Nominations may be made by any University faculty member. Nominations must be made in combination with matching funds and be approved by and submitted through the nominator's department chair and dean. Nominations should be submitted at least thirty days before a funding decision is required. Contact
