Office of the Vice Provost for Academic and Multicultural Affairs

Letter from the Vice Provost

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Since 1987, the University of Michigan has made remarkable progress by increasing the number of faculty and students of color and by heightening campus and community awareness of the issues surrounding multiculturalism. Increased representation remains an issue of extreme importance, but the enhancement of the intellectual diversity of the curriculum and the cocurriculum is equally critical. Not only do we need to continue our emphasis to broaden ethnic representation among the faculty and student body - we also need to fundamentally change the way we learn and teach.

The anticipated demands of a changing world compel American higher education to proceed in this direction. Fortunately, we have many opportunities to move toward our goals. The attainment of a multicultural university is within Michigan's reach.

The staff of the Office of Academic and Multicultural Affairs work with our colleagues throughout the University through programs, initiatives, and advocacy to ensure that the University of Michigan realizes its goal as the multicultural academic community of the 21st century. We welcome your interest in our office and are eager to learn of your questions, concerns, and ideas.

Sincerely,

Lester P. Monts
Vice Provost for Academic and Multicultural Affairs
Professor of Music
