Derek moved to Atlanta for a few years for roofing work in the mid 1980s, but has lived most of his adult life in and around Ann Arbor.  Derek's younger sister, Kristin, lives in Ann Arbor too, with her three dogs (Hobie, Olivia, and Isabel), and her husband, Eric.
