Practice Insider: Thursday 4/23

Time: 10 PM - 12 AM
Location: Oosterbaan Fieldhouse

In preparations for Nationals, the Wolverines have increased their practice schedule, increased their intensity, and increased their sweat.

Several players are choosing to wear sweat shirts, sweat pants, leggings, or some combination to practice in preparations for the Arizona heat. "We're used to practicing indoors in Oosterbaan but when we go down to Arizona it's not going to be comfortable so we're preparing for the 95 degree heat the best we can," explained junior attacker Amy Johnson.

Michigan has dramatically upped their practice schedule from the usual three nights per week. Between the end of classes on April 21st and May 6th, the team has ten practices on the calendar.

Michigan Holds Alumni Game

October 26th, 2008

Ann Arbor, Mich. -- The Wolverines welcomed back alums Noelle Frazier, Marie Wolbert, Ashley Steitz, and Mimi Kuehn who took part in an alumni game/intrasquad scrimmage at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse. Johnny Sung and Mary Ann Meltzer, former Michigan Lacrosse coaches also came back to watch the game. The players and alums enjoyed reuniting with their former coaches and teammates. Frazier (2004-07), brought her new baby, Madison who gave the Wolverines on the sideline a welcome distraction as they took a breather from the game. Frazier currently resides in Cleveland, OH. Madison and Wolbert (2004-07) were both captains and All-Americans in 2007 for the Wolverines. Wolbert currently lives in Chicago, IL. The fourth former player to participate, Kuehn (2003-06) is now living in Columbus, OH. Steitz (2005-08) did not play in the scrimmage but watched from the sidelines. She is also living in Chicago, IL. Sung and Meltzer are both still coaching at Adrian and University of Detroit Mercy, respectively.

Michigan defeats Michigan State in Season-Opening Scrimmage

October 24th, 2008

Ann Arbor, Mich. -- After falling behind 3-1 early on, Michigan from behind to beat the visiting Michigan State Spartans 10-8 at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines got on the board first but the Spartans countered with three unanswered goals. Michigan was able to stay in the game as the two teams traded goals throughout the first half. Liz Mennen played goalie in the first half, allowing five goals while making one save. Midway through the second half, Michigan was able to secure the lead which they would hold on to for the win. Head coach, Jen Dunbar thought that the team's play made it clear that this was the first game of the season but she felt encouraged watching the play of the defense as they limited Michigan State just three goals in the second half. Emmy Scheidt replaced Mennen in the net for the second half and gave up three goals while making five saves. Sophomore Amanda Schutte (Encinatas, CA), Sophomore Britt Boehm (Cleveland, OH), and Junior Amy Johnson (Washington D.C.) each scored two goals while Boehm added a team-high three assists. Other goal scorers for Michigan were Jess Stanley, Julie Baskind (Farmington, MA), Becca Miller, Amy Santorello (Westfield, NJ), and Rachel Lary (San Diego, CA). The team will next be in action on Sunday, October 26th at 9:30am for their annual Alumni Game held in Oosterbaan Fieldhouse.
