Columbus, OH. – The #2 seed Michigan Wolverines started the WCLL Regional Tournament off on a good note as they handled the #7 seed Toledo Rockets with relative ease. Although the Wolverines did not play their best all-around lacrosse, they managed to earn an eight goal victory over the Rockets, who struggled to keep up.

Michigan jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with great defensive pressure and offensive mastery by junior Julianne Patterson (Rochester, NY/Victor) and sophomore Katie Mezwa (Rochester Hills, MI/Sacred Heart). Patterson managed 2 goals, 1 assist; and Mezwa amassed 1 goal, 2 assists, during that scoring run.

With just over five minutes left in the first half, the Rockets started to make things interesting as they scored two goals within two minutes, to cut Michigan’s lead in half. But then the duo of Mezwa and Patterson struck again as they each scored a goal to reestablish the Wolverine’s four goal lead.

Michigan started the second half very similarly to the first. Once again Patterson started off a scoring run for the Maize and Blue. Toledo was able to finally score at the 11 minute mark stopping a 7-0 run by Michigan. Toledo was able to finish the game on a strong note as the outscored the Wolverines 3-1 in the last eight minutes of the game. However, it was clearly not enough to overcome the secure 11 goal lead the Wolverines managed to build.

Junior Julianne Patterson put on a great showing in the first game of the Regional Tournament; she amassed a team high six goals to go along with an assist.
Sophomore Katie Mezwa also had a great performance as she scored four goals and connected on two assists.

As a team, Michigan played with great intensity on both sides of the ball; they forced Toledo into making multiple errors. The Rockets could not match the effort and skill-set of Michigan.
The Wolverines have earned a place in the Semi-Finals, and will take the field again tomorrow (April 21) morning at 10:00 AM ET against No. 3-seeded Ohio State. Follow Michigan Lacrosse on twitter (@umichwlaxclub) for live, in-game updates.
