Sylvicole de Bayanga:

Two logging companies have been active in the Dzangha Sangha Protected Area, CAR. The first is Sylvicole de Bayanga (President Directeur General, Gerard Ruchonnet and Directeur General Gilles LeTheul from approximately 1993-1997). Operating out of an infrastructure initially built by a Yugoslavian parastatal called Slovenia Bois in the late 1970’s, and Sylvicole’s operations are currently on hold due to financial difficulties and technical discussions about the future of logging in the Reserve. The sawmill and related facilities in Bayanga were quite impressive for the era in which they were constructed, and boast a now somewhat run-down generator powered by the wood chip waste of the mill for fuel efficiency (obtaining fuel regularly and affordably is, according to logging company personnel, one of the major constraints to regular operations in Bayanga). Central African Director Kalixte Mpago has worked at the Bayanga sawmill site since the days of the Yugoslavians. He participated in SRN’s first meetings (see Conferences, Bayanga 1997 RRDWS for his presentation of Sylvicole statistics on employment) and has been a very helpful collaborator in our efforts to increase communication between conservationists and timber industry personnel.

SESAM:

The second company active in the area is known as SESAM, and is located further north and west of Bayanga. SESAM has recently been purchased, in part, by Malaysian interests and is rapidly increasing both road surface in its sector and logging efficiency more generally. SESAM’s concession was the object of an experimental management plan, evaluation, and report (under the auspices of the French Cooperation funded "Projet Amenagement Forestier’ or PAF, from which a representative also attended our first field meetings, RRDWS 1997).
