Simonis was our middle cat, but she was the first to pass away. In early March 2009, we noticed that she didn't have her usual pep, so after a few days, we took her to the vet and got some very bad news. She'd lost 2 pounds since her last annual check-up, and she evidently hadn't been drinking water for several days. She had advanced kidney failure - no cure. There was a treatment option, but even at best, she might have lived a few more weeks. We couldn't bear the thought of her being in pain during her last moments on earth, so we made the right choice and decided to have her euthanized. We took her home for one last night, which was the saddest night of our lives. Putting her to sleep was one of the hardest things we've ever had to do, but we know that we did the right thing for her. As the vet put it on the day she died, "We make decisions for our pets their entire lives; deciding when to let go is in many ways the most important one."

Here's what I wrote about her for this website many years ago when she was vibrant, sweet, and full of vigor. Although she's gone, this is how I want to remember her:

Simonis is the middle one in age and the smallest in stature.  She often gets compliments on her coat, which is an unusual calico/striped/multicolor array.  Although she doesn't like to be held, she is the friendliest and sweetest of our cats and loves a good pat/scratch on the head, even by strangers.  At least a half dozen people, after meeting her, have said, "I'm not really a cat person, but THIS cat I like!"  She even befriended our neighbor Kathy, who hates (hated) cats.

Here's how smart Simonis is:  at some point, she figured out that Kathy has a key to our house.  When we are not home, and she wants to go in, she goes over to Kathy's house and bugs her relentlessly until Kathy lets her in.  She even "supervises" Kathy while she is working out in her garden.  They have become great buddies.  Simonis now even hangs out with Kathy's son, Matt, and his buddies when they are working on their cars.  I keep asking if she's bugging them, but they all say they enjoy her company. Matt must really enjoy her company, because he is allergic to cats!

She has taken a liking to the Schaefers.

Simonie knows that our neighbors, the Schaefers, have a key to our house, so she used to follow Kathy around in the yard when she wanted to go in. One day, about a year after her nemesis Pip (the Schaefers' terrier, who was decidedly anti-cat) died, she wandered right into their house behind Kathy. She spent most of that first visit sniffing around to make sure Pip was not still there. Since then, she has visited many times, staying up to an hour and making herself right at home. Kathy will call us when she hears our car pull in and ask what time Simonie's curfew is. We'll go over to get her, and she'll follow us home.

This whole "new carpet installation" thing is a major inconvenience to my daily routine.  You've given me no choice but to pee somewhere in protest.

Simonie loves cars!
