COURSE OVERVIEW

This course has several goals; one is to introduce you to the computing environment and resources of the University of Michigan. Another is to insure that you have a basic portfolio of computing skills to facilitate your work in other courses in the Division of Kinesiology and at the University of Michigan. Finally, you will develop an appreciation and understanding for how information is available and can be processed through modern hardware and software procedures such as searching on the World Wide Web and exchanging information electronically. This course is targeted for students at the first year level with limited computer skills on the UM system.

There are six sections covering the following set of basic skills:

    1. File transfer protocol and the UM System
    2. Textual manipulation and processing
    3. Searching for information through University of Michigan library facilities
    4. Numerical and symbolic manipulation and processing
    5. Creating web-ready material: Introduction to Dreamweaver MX
    6. Data presentation

CLASS ETIQUETTE

ATTENDANCE

Attendance is not required although it is highly recommended. In many instances, the only way to determine how to complete an assignment will be covered in class.

ASSIGNMENTS

Individual reading material and weekly assignments are available on the class web page (see below). In a few instances needed materials will be forwarded to you one week in advance. Assignments are due prior to the following class session (1 week later). You are to turn in your assignments to your first MVS110 instructor (not Professor Katch); that is, the instructor you meet during the first week of school (even though you may no longer be in that instructors section at the time you do your Lab assignment.)
