Nominations for New
CBI Trainees
Dear Training Faculty,
As you know, our training program has been renewed for an additional
3 years. Unfortunately, we received fewer trainee slots than
what was requested due to budgetary issues at NIH. I believe
that we have worked out a way to appoint at least two, and possibly
three, new trainees for the upcoming academic year. Therefore,
I am now contacting you to encourage you to nominate second (or
third) year graduate students that you feel would be appropriate
to participate in our program.
For those students that you wish to nominate, please send the
following information directly to me no
later than July 1st for appointments beginning Sept 1st.
- A nominating letter explaining why the
nominee would be a good fit in our program and discussing
the relationship of the proposed thesis project to the Chemistry
Biology Interface. You should also state your commitment
to allowing the student to participate in the student sabbatical
and could suggest possible training sites that would be appropriate
(enumeration of suggested sites is optional) A letter from
the nominee requesting to be considered for the training
program. The nominee should indicate that they are willing
to participate in the CBI specific courses and events. The
nominee should also explain how their thesis project fits
into the CBI program. Undergraduate and graduate transcripts
GRE scores
- Any additional information you feel may
be pertinent to the selection committee (e.g., copies of
manuscripts or abstracts)
Please send this information as a hard copy to
me in the Chemistry Department.
The cbi web page (http://www.umich.edu/~michchem/cbi/) provides
much information about our program. In particular, the sections
on coursework and the CBI handbook should address most questions.
I will be out of e-mail contact for most of the remainder of
May, but will be able to answer questions sporadically during
this period.
After receiving the student nominations, we will convene a
selection committee which will set a date to interview potential
trainees. It is my expectation that trainees will be appointed
for a 20-month period (probably starting in September with
the possibility that one student begins training in January).
This tenure may be extended if the number of training slots
for our program is increased during the next budgetary cycle.
I encourage faculty from all of our parent programs to submit
nominations. We are striving to develop a diverse group of
trainees, with expertise across the Chemistry/Biology Interface.
We also strongly encourage you to consider nominating students
from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the
sciences.
Best regards,
Vince
