Michigan Women's Lacrosse
holds tryouts
Day One - Monday 9/28:
36 girls made their way through the cold and rain for
Michigan Lacrosse's first of four scheduled tryouts Monday
night at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse. 19 Wolverines return from
last year's squad which completed a 20-5 season with a
strong fifth place finish at Nationals.
Michigan's coaching staff returns on the heels of their
third consecutive MHSAA State Championship at the helm of
Birmingham United. Key players back for the Wolverines
include sophomore goalie Emmy Scheidt (Birmingham, MI/Seaholm)
along with senior Amy Johnson (Washington, D.C./Holton-Arms)
who lead the team with 59 goals last year.
To kick off the tryout, players pushed through twenty
100-yard sprints before moving on to a range of drills and
concluding with a full-field scrimmage. Two hours, two fewer
players, and thirteen bags of ice later, the girls had
dragged themselves off the field turf, sure to sleep soundly
before returning for more of the same on Tuesday.
NOTES: Sophomores Jenna Weinberg,
Delaney Kempner,
and Ifat Ribon sat out practice in observance of Yom
Kippur...Senior Ame Maturo was forced to the sidelines after
aggravating tendinitis in her Achilles during the initial
sprints.
Day Two - Tuesday 9/29:
The second day of tryouts began with a long series of
gassers which turned into forty-five minutes of conditioning
testing the endurance of the 35 girls in attendance before
going into drills.
After running through shuttle drills, the squad split into
three stations working on eight-meter shots, transition
play, and one-on-one drills. While the coaches led the
tryout, Senior tri-captain Arielle Dyner (Livingston,
NJ/Livingston) could be heard above the rest of the team
shouting encouragement at her teammates, new and old. "I
just take more of a leadership role which is what I like to
do because I like to motivate the team," said Dyner
regarding her new role as a captain.
Dyner is joined by senior Amy Santoriello (Westfield,
NJ/Westfield) along with junior Britt Boehm (Rocky River,
OH/Magnificant) as the three captains who were elected at the conclusion of last season.
The three have ambitious goals for the season as they hope
to pick up right where the team left off in Scottsdale last
season. "We finished really well last year, entering (the
National Tournament) as the ninth seed and finishing in
fifth place," said Dyner. "Our expectations are no longer
game-by-game. Our goal is to be National Champions and
we're going to do it by winning every game."
NOTES: Three players who tried out yesterday did not
return Tuesday night...Maturo sat out practice for the second
day with tendinitis...Tomorrow's tryouts will be 9-11pm
instead of 7-9 as previously posted on the website.
Tryout schedule set
Michigan Women's Lacrosse will be holding tryouts for
the 2009-10 team at Oosterbaan
Fieldhouse as follows:
Mon. 9/28: 7-9pm
Tue. 9/29: 7-10pm
